The Right Way to Use or Release Tie Down Ratchet Straps

When it comes to securing cargo, nothing beats a ratchet strap. Ratchet straps are common fasteners used to tie down cargo during transport. Because these straps can support many different weights and cargo sizes. As a consumer, how can we pick up the most suitable ratchet straps in the market? In order to properly use your ratchet straps, here we could tell you how to use and release the ratchet straps.

Before secure the cargo, we should select the most workable one according to the cargo size and cargo weight. Always use a strap with a rating higher than the weight of your load. And another is always inspecting the straps for signs of wear before using them. Do not use a strap that has fraying, abrasive wear, broken or worn-down stitching, tears, cuts, or defective hardware. If we can’t choose the proper one, then the road hazards are about to happen.

1. Use the release handle to open the ratchet. The release handle, it’s located in the center of the top movable piece of the ratchet. Pull up the release handle and flip the ratchet fully open. Set the open ratchet on a table before you so that the spiked wheels (cogs) are facing upwards. Insert loose end of strap into mandrel of the ratchet.

2. Pull strap through slot in mandrel until it feels taut. Remember that you can always tighten it with the ratchet later, so don’t worry too much about the length.

3. Secure your cargo with a firm attachment point, such as a luggage rack, roof rack or hooks mounted in a truck bed. Don’t be tempted to tie a load on top of your car if you don’t have a rack of some sort—you’ll never be able to secure the ratchet straps enough for safe hauling.

4. Hook the ends of the ratchet strap to a solid surface, check the length of the webbing to make sure it isn’t twisting and is flat against your cargo. Slowly tighten the strap, checking the positioning of the webbing as you go to verify it doesn’t shift or bind somewhere. Cinch until the strap is taut but be careful not to overtighten, which could damage the strap or whatever you’re hauling.

5. Lock the strap securely. Flip the ratchet back into the closed position. Press it closed until you hear it latch. This means that the strap is locked into place and should hold your cargo securely.
